Dengue Fever (DF) remains a serious public health issue in Indonesia.
According to the Ministry of Health data, in 2022, there were 131,265 cases of DF, with about 40% occurring in 0–14dren aged 0-14 years. Out of the total DF cases, the number of deaths reached 1,135 cases with 73% occurring in 0–14dren aged 0-14 years.
Vaccination is one of the important preventive steps in controlling the spread of this disease.
What is the Tetravalent Dengue Fever Vaccine?
The tetravalent dengue fever vaccine is designed to provide protection against four dengue virus serotypes (DENV 1, 2, 3, and 4). In Indonesia, there are two types of DF vaccines that have been approved by the BPOM: Qdenga (TAK-003) and Dengvaxia (CYD-TDV).
Qdenga is a Tetravalent dengue vaccine that contains weakened dengue virus, providing protection against all four dengue virus serotypes.
The Qdenga vaccine is 80.2% effective at preventing dengue infections and 95.4% effective at preventing hospitalizations.
Meanwhile, Dengvaxia is a tetravalent vaccinTetravalent using recombinant DNA technology, consisting of the pre-membrane (prM) and envelope (E) gene structures from all four dengue virus serotypes combined with non-structural genes from the yellow fever 17D virus.
The Dengvaxia vaccine is about 82% effective in those previously infected with dengue and 79% effective in preventing hospitalization.
Tetravalent Dengue Fever Vaccine Recipients
Based on WHO recommendations and clinical trial results, the tetravalent DF vaccTetravalentadministered considering several recipient criteria:
1. Recommended Groups:
- Children and adolescents aged 6–45 years living in dengue-endemic areas
- Individuals with a previously confirmed dengue infection through laboratory examination
- People living in areas with high dengue transmission
2. Not Recommended Groups:
- Children under 6 years old
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women
- Individuals with immune system disorders
- Individuals undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, such as corticosteroids or chemotherapy
- People with a history of severe allergic reactions to vaccine components
Before administering the vaccine, screening and medical evaluation should be performed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of vaccination.
How Much Does the Dengue Fever Vaccine Cost?
The price of the DF vaccine in Indonesia varies depending on the type of vaccine and the health facility providing the service. Here are the price details of the available DF vaccines at Tirta Medical Centre (TMC):

Preparation for Dengue Fever Vaccination
Before undergoing dengue fever vaccination, there are several preparations and procedures to be considered:
– Steps to Take Before Vaccination:
- Ensure the body is healthy and not currently experiencing a fever.
- Do not have a history of severe allergies to vaccine components.
- Consult with a doctor regarding health history.
- Provide informed consent or approval for medical procedures.
– Vaccine Injection Process:
- The vaccine is administered via an injection into the upper arm’s subcutaneous fat tissue.
- Administered in two doses, spaced three months apart. Each dose contains 0.5 ml of the tetravalent vaccine.
- A 30-minute observation period follows the injection to monitor for allergic reactions.
How to Prevent Dengue Fever
Preventing dengue fever can be achieved through various approaches such as vector control, self-protection, and environmental protection. Here are detailed explanations for each control method:
1. Vector Control
- Apply the 3M Plus principle:
- Regularly drain water containers.
- Keep water containers tightly closed.
- Bury or recycle old items that can hold water.
- Plus: Maintain larvicide-eating fish and distribute larvicide.
2. Self-Protection
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
- Install wire mesh to optimize home ventilation.
- Use mosquito repellent lotion.
- Avoid being outdoors during peak mosquito activity times (morning and evening).
3. Environmental Protection
- Clean clogged drains and gutters.
- Guarantee optimal drainage performance.
- Conduct fogging or fumigation as recommended by the local health department.
- Participate in community cleanup activities.
