Here are 10 urine colors and their meanings that you need to know:

1. Clear

Clear or colorless urine indicates that you are consuming too much fluid. This can alter the electrolyte balance in your blood and is usually not a cause for concern.

Consistently clear urine may indicate diabetes, as diabetics often experience increased thirst and frequent urination.

Clear urine can also be a sign of kidney issues such as cirrhosis or hepatitis. If your urine is clear but you’re not drinking much water, it’s best to see a doctor for a urine test.

2. Pale yellow or clear

Pale yellow and clear urine color is normal and indicates that you are well-hydrated. This means you are drinking enough water and your body is in balance.

If you do not feel thirsty and your urine is pale yellow, you are likely getting enough water.

3. Dark Yellow or Amber

Urine that is dark yellow or amber indicates mild dehydration. If you notice your urine starting to darken, increase your water intake immediately to prevent further dehydration.

Dark yellow color can also indicate the presence of a lot of vitamin B in the blood. If your urine remains dark after drinking plenty of water, there could be an issue with your liver or kidneys.

4. Orange

Orange or rust-colored urine indicates dehydration or possible health issues with the bile ducts. Certain vitamins, like riboflavin, and medications such as sulfasalazine and some chemotherapy drugs can cause orange urine.

If you’re not eating foods or taking medications that could cause this color, you should see a doctor.

5. Dark Brown

Urine that is dark brown can be a sign of severe dehydration or issues with the kidneys and liver. If accompanied by other symptoms such as flank pain or upper right abdominal pain, consult a doctor immediately.

Dark brown urine can also be caused by consuming foods like fava beans, rhubarb, or aloe vera.

Certain medications like chloroquine, primaquine, metronidazole, nitrofurantoin, and some others can also cause dark brown urine. Consult a doctor if you’re not eating foods or taking medications that could cause this color.

6. Red or Pink

Urine that is red or pink can be a sign of blood in the urine, known as hematuria. This may be due to a urinary tract infection, kidney stones, or conditions like an enlarged prostate in men.

Additionally, consuming foods such as beets, blackberries, or rhubarb can also cause urine to be red or pink.

Certain medications like senna and phenazopyridine can also change the color of urine to red or pink.

If you notice blood in your urine, consult with a doctor immediately to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment.

7. Blue or Green

Blue or green urine is rare, often caused by foods or medications with blue or green dye. For example, food coloring, medications such as amitriptyline, and indomethacin can cause this color change.

A urinary tract infection caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa can also make the urine appear green or blue. Additionally, some medical procedures involving dyes in the kidneys or bladder can cause urine to turn blue or green.

If this color persists for more than two days, it is advisable to consult with a doctor for further assessment.

8. Cloudy

Cloudy urine is often caused by a urinary tract infection (UTI) or kidney stones. UTIs happen when bacteria infect the urinary tract, prompting the body to send white blood cells to combat the infection, which are then released in the urine.

Additionally, dehydration can also cause urine to become cloudy due to high urine concentration. If your cloudy urine has a foul smell, causes pain when you urinate, or is accompanied by a fever, get medical help right away to prevent complications.

9. Milky White

Urine that is milky white can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or kidney issues. This can be caused by the presence of uric acid crystals formed in the urine, especially in cold room temperatures.

Conditions such as diabetes or a prostate infection can also cause urine to be milky white. If this condition persists, consult with a doctor for further evaluation.

10. Purple

Purple urine is very rare and is usually associated with Purple Urine Bag Syndrome (PUBS). PUBS occurs in patients with urinary tract infections, particularly in women with constipation.

Bacteria in the urine produce enzymes that convert indoxyl sulfate into red and blue pigments, which then react with the plastic of the urine bag, producing a purple color.

PUBS is rare but typically not harmful. It usually just requires changing the catheter and urine bag, plus antibiotics if there’s an infection.
